Musway SW-A7 under-seat subwoofer and MWS822 flat subwoofer
Musway SW-A7 under-seat subwoofer and MWS822 flat subwoofer
No room for a subwoofer box? Musway flat subwoofers mount in as little as 74.1 mm, and active under-seat subwoofers add bass without losing cargo space. Here is how to choose.

Modern vehicles are not built with subwoofers in mind. Spare tire wells are full, trunks are shallower, pickup cabs have almost no room behind the seat, and electric vehicles hide batteries where a box used to go. Yet low bass is what makes music feel full, and factory speakers simply cannot reproduce it.

The answer is a subwoofer designed for small spaces. Musway offers two approaches: flat passive subwoofers that mount in a fraction of the depth of a standard woofer, and active under-seat subwoofers with a built-in amplifier. This guide explains both and helps you choose.

Why standard subwoofers do not fit

A conventional 10-inch subwoofer needs a deep motor and basket, plus an enclosure large enough for the cone to work against. In a sedan trunk that is manageable, but in a regular-cab truck, a sports car, a minivan with third-row seating or an electric vehicle, there is often nowhere to put it without losing the space you bought the vehicle for.

Flat subwoofers: big bass in very little depth

Musway flat subwoofers are engineered for installation locations with very little depth. They use very stiff cones made from glass fiber and carbon composite, powerful magnets and long-throw voice coils so they still move real air despite their slim profile.

Model Size Mounting depth Voice coils
MWS822 8 in 78 mm Dual 2 ohm
MWS844 8 in 78 mm Dual 4 ohm
MWS1022 10 in 87 mm Dual 2 ohm
MWS1044 10 in See product page Dual 4 ohm
MWF1022SQ 10 in 74.1 mm (2.92 in) See product page
MWF104SQ 10 in 2.9 in See product page

The MWS series uses 50 mm dual voice coils with 40 or 45 ounce magnets. The MWF series goes even further, with mounting depths under 3 inches, which opens up compact sealed enclosures, spare tire wells and side-panel installs that were not possible before. The MWF1044SQ completes the MWF lineup.

Choosing 2-ohm or 4-ohm coils

Dual voice coils give you wiring flexibility. A dual 2-ohm subwoofer can be wired to 1 ohm (parallel) or 4 ohms (series). A dual 4-ohm subwoofer can be wired to 2 ohms (parallel) or 8 ohms (series). Choose the version that lets you reach the impedance where your amplifier makes the right power. For two subwoofers on one mono amplifier, dual 4-ohm models wired in parallel and then paired in parallel present 1 ohm.

Active under-seat subwoofers: the easiest bass upgrade

An active subwoofer combines the woofer, the enclosure and the amplifier in one unit. You connect power, ground, a signal and a remote turn-on, and the bass is done.

The Musway SW-A7 is a 6.5-inch active under-seat subwoofer system with a built-in 300-watt RMS Class A/B amplifier and a frequency range of 20 Hz to 150 Hz. Its reinforced steel frame and rubber surround are built for long-term reliability, and the compact enclosure fits under most front seats. For more output, the MF110A is a 10-inch active subwoofer system with a built-in 300-watt RMS Class D amplifier in a compact enclosure.

Compact passive enclosures

If you already have an amplifier, Musway's compact bass-reflex subwoofer systems such as the MF108Q, MR108Q and MR208Q are another option. They use a 2 + 2 ohm configuration designed to pull efficient power from Musway amplifiers, carpeted MDF housings that blend into the interior, and QUICK CONNECT sockets for simple wiring.

Flat vs active: which should you choose?

If you want... Choose
The simplest install with no extra amplifier Active subwoofer (SW-A7 or MF110A)
Maximum output in a thin custom enclosure Flat subwoofer (MWS or MWF series) with a mono amplifier
A hidden install in a spare tire well or side panel MWF series flat subwoofer
A finished box that drops into the trunk MF108Q, MR108Q or MR208Q enclosure

Powering a flat subwoofer

A flat passive subwoofer needs an amplifier. The ONE.600 mono amplifier is a strong match for a single flat subwoofer: it delivers 250 watts RMS at 4 ohms, 400 watts at 2 ohms and 650 watts at 1 ohm, with a remote bass level controller included. If you are already running a Musway DSP amplifier, use one of its processed outputs to feed the subwoofer amplifier so bass is crossed over and time-aligned with the rest of the system.

Installation tips for tight spaces

  • Measure height, width and depth carefully, including seat rails, wiring and carpet thickness.
  • Leave clearance in front of the cone so it can move freely.
  • Build sealed enclosures airtight and brace large flat panels to prevent flex and rattles.
  • Use a subsonic filter to protect the subwoofer from frequencies too low to hear.
  • Add sound deadening around the install area to keep panels from buzzing.

Frequently asked questions

Do flat subwoofers sound as good as standard subwoofers?

A well-designed flat subwoofer in the correct enclosure sounds tight and musical. It will not match a large woofer in a large box for maximum output, but in a small cabin the difference is smaller than most people expect.

Can I install an under-seat subwoofer with a factory radio?

Yes. Active subwoofers like the SW-A7 can be fed from the factory speaker signal, and Musway DSP amplifiers can provide a processed subwoofer output.

Where can a flat subwoofer go?

Common locations include under or behind seats, inside spare tire wells, in side panels, in the floor of SUVs and behind rear seats in pickup trucks.

The bottom line

You do not have to give up your trunk or your rear seat to get real bass. Choose an active subwoofer for the easiest upgrade, or a Musway flat subwoofer with a ONE series amplifier for more output in a custom location. Either way, your music finally gets the low end it was recorded with.
